The BIGG Family

Introduction

Family Tree         Family Group Sheet

[Derivation of name - probably derived many times, so families bearing this name will have started in many places and on many occasions]

[Distribution throughout the UK - based on census data]

Genealogical sources have proliferated since the birth of the internet.  Before then they consisted mainly of paper and microfilmed documents held by, for example, the Register of Births, Marriages and Deaths which held copies of all these records since 1837 and is stored in London; or church records which were usually held in each county's record office.  There was also the International Genealogical Index (IGI) which is a computerised, but incomplete record of church marriages and christenings published on microfilm by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints (the Mormon Church). This was made freely available to all at their Family History Centres located throughout the world, normally based at a local Mormon Church building.  A copy was also often held by large public libraries.

Now, all of this is available on the internet.  The IGI can be found at http://www.familysearch.org.   Other genealogical material, such as all the UK's censuses from 1841 to 1911 which have now been indexed and are made available for searching by several organisations such as http://www.ancestry.co.uk or http://www.findmypast.co.uk.

There are a surprisingly large number of christenings and marriages recorded in the IGI under the name of BIGG, BIGGS and other variants. The majority are for BIGGS rather than BIGG but at least one of our BIGG families has had an event recorded under BIGGS, so these entries should not be ignored. Even in Kent, where the population was much smaller than in Middlesex (which includes most of London), I have uncovered about 1000 BIGG events so far from the IGI.  (An event in this context is a christening or a marriage.)

The following sections show each generation of our Bigg family in turn.  In addition, for each in the chain of ancestors, I have tried to include a copy of two reports.  One is what Family Tree Maker, my family history program, calls a Family Group Sheet.  The other is a conventional family tree showing this ancestor's immediate family.  These can be accessed from the individual's page by clicking on the links at the top of the page.
