John, the fifth child of Hugh and Elizabeth Long, was baptised in Gwennap in 1823.  When the mines at Gwennap began to close, John found work in the mines at Stoke Climsland, in the north of Cornwall on the border with Devon.  In the 1851 Census he is listed as lodging with a family named Donnals at Stoke Climsland.  (Mrs Donnals is believed to be his sister, Mary Jane.)   On April 8th, 1852 he married Jane Ann Wearing (often written as Werren, which is how the name is pronounced) at Stoke Climsland.  Both signed with a cross. The witnesses were Martha Long, his younger sister who married William Trethewey, and William Fisher.

The 1871 census records the family as living in the parish of St Ive, Cornwall, working as a copper miner.  By 1876 when Fred was born, they have moved to Habergham Eaves, Burnley, Lancs.  However, life was still hard as the 1881 census records John as being an unemployed coal miner.  He died a year later aged 58.

Of their 13 children, 5 died in infancy but the rest grew to adulthood and, with the exception of Martha who died when she was 43, lived to a ripe old age!
